The negotiations come after Israeli strikes on Hezbollah after the U.S.-Iran ceasefire announcement.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio mediated peace talks between Israel and Iran in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. The discussions were the first negotiations between those two nations in over three decades. Iran-backed Hezbollah violated a ceasefire last month when it launched rockets into Israel, which Israel responded to with airstrikes.
“The hope today is that we can outline the framework upon which a permanent, lasting peace can be developed so that the people of Israel can live in peace and the people of Lebanon can live, not just in peace but in the prosperity and security that they deserve,” the U.S. secretary of state said at the meeting. “This is a process, not an event. This is more than just one day. This will take time, but we believe it is worth this endeavor, and it’s a historic gathering that we hope to build on.”
Secretary Rubio met with Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter and Lebanese Ambassador to the United States Nada Hamadeh Moawad at the Department of State for working-level peace discussions. The last indirect peace talks between Israel and Lebanon occurred in 1993. The
