Transportation Department Reports Reduction in Traffic Fatalities in 2025

NHTSA officials cite actions that have correlated to traffic fatality reduction.

The Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that traffic deaths were at a record low in 2025. An estimated 36,640 traffic deaths occurred in 2025, a 6.7 percent decrease from 2024, with a total of 1.10 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. The administration estimated fatality decreases in 39 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, even with a 0.9 percent increase in vehicle miles traveled.

“President Trump and I are committed to keeping American families safe on our roads. In the past year alone, we’ve partnered with our incredible law enforcement officers to get dangerous foreign truck drivers off the roads and educate the public about the dangers of distracted driving, drunk driving, and driving without a seat belt,“ said Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. “We’ve also worked with auto manufacturers to stand up our Freedom Means Affordable Cars initiative to make buying new, safer cars more affordable. At this Department, the safety and success of American families drive our work.”

The department said its has contributed to these numbers through multiple avenues, such as a strengthened partnership with law enforcement, an increase in standards for commercial drivers, and by lowering costs for newer and safer vehicle models.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Chair Jennifer Homendy and members of the NHTSA as they continue to compile data and reports that will help them track the effectiveness of federal regulations.
  • For Secretary Duffy and Transportation Department officials as they support measures to improve the safety of Americans on the road.
