Pramila Jayapal was born in September 1965  In Chennai, India. She spent her childhood in Indonesia and Singapore, immigrating to the U.S. at age 16 to attend college. She earned an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and a Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University. She worked as a financial analyst and on development projects from Chicago to Thailand. 

She founded an advocacy group for immigration reform and immigrants. She served two years in the Washington Senate before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, assuming office in January 2017. 

Jayapal is married to Steven Williamson, and she has a child from a previous marriage. She also has a stepson. Born into a Hindu family, she claims no particular faith.

Representative Pramila Jayapal of Washington, ranking member on the House Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, hosted another shadow hearing titled “Kidnapped and Disappeared in which she promoted prosecuting members of immigration law enforcement and providing reparations to children and families who illegally entered the United States. 

“The people that have been inflicting this harm [on migrants] need to be prosecuted,” Congresswoman Jayapal said. “They need to be brought before us, and they need to be held account [sic] for the trauma that they have created, and we are going to have to have some form of reparation for the kids and the families that have been traumatized through all of this.”

In the first of her shadow hearings on this topic in June of 2025, Representative Jayapal stated that President Trump’s administration has not upheld the rights of “lawful and undocumented“ immigrants, claiming he “has violated multiple constitutional rights.“
