The upper chamber excluded ICE and Border Patrol from the appropriations after the president recommended funding them through reconciliation.
President Donald Trump has taken steps to ensure employees in the Department of Homeland Security receive pay from alternate sources as the partial shutdown has surpassed all previous government shutdown records for length, at 52 days.
The president had urged the House to take up the legislation passed by the Senate to fund the majority of DHS and agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the U.S. Coast Guard. The upper chamber of Congress had carved out U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol from the appropriations. President Trump told House and Senate majority leaders to work on the remaining funding through reconciliation, with a June 1 deadline.
The House of Representatives held a brief pro forma session, in which no debating or voting occurred, on Monday. The lower chamber is currently on spring recess.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For President Trump and members of his administration as they seek to ensure DHS employees are receive compensation during the shutdown.
- For members of the House as they deliberate the partial funding legislation and determine whether or not to approve it.
