House Oversight Committee Investigates 2020 Census Bureau Results

Political organizations potentially influenced the bureau’s determinations.

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is investigating the partnership the U.S. Census Bureau had with political organizations at the time the nationwide census was held in 2020, which may have impacted the apportionment of Electoral College votes and congressional seats. Chair James Comer of Kentucky sent a letter to acting Census Bureau Director George Cook seeking information on the agency’s connections with the Human Rights Campaign, the National Urban League, and the NAACP.

Chairman Comer wrote, “The Bureau’s partnerships with certain organizations in 2020 cast doubt on the reliability of the 2020 Census results. The Bureau enlisted many partner organizations to facilitate aspects of the enumeration process for the 2020 Census. Statements made by leaders of some of these organizations raise serious questions about those organizations’ ability to remain non-partisan and unbiased in their involvement with the census.”

Chairman Comer stated, “The Bureau’s Post-Enumeration Survey (PES) following the 2020 Census revealed significant errors in undercounting and overcounting of states’ populations.“

The committee requested documentation “pertaining to measures the bureau took to ensure its partner organizations remained politically neutral and unbiased” and “pertaining to delays in pre-apportionment work in 2020 and 2021“ and whether or how “enumeration alterations affecting the ultimate apportionment of congressional districts in 2021” may have been made.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Chair Comer and members of the House Oversight Committee as they investigate the inaccuracies of the latest census.
  • For Acting Director Cook as he responds to the request for documentation on the census results and apportionments.
