Grants are intended to assist host cities manage the increased transit demand during the international tournament.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will distribute approximately $100.3 million to public transit systems in U.S. cities hosting matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the funding is intended to help transit agencies expand services and prepare for increased travel demand as international visitors and spectators attend matches and related events.
“DOT is doing its part to ensure the United States is ready to host the most spectacular World Cup in history,” said Secretary Duffy. “We’re proud to partner with host cities to provide fans with a seamless travel experience that will be part of the memories they cherish from attending these historic games.”
The funding will support planning, capital projects, and operating costs associated with transportation near stadiums and event sites. Grants will be allocated using a formula that considers stadium capacity and the number of matches scheduled in each host city. The initiative was authorized through the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2026.
