Federal Judge Blocks FL Governor’s Designation of Muslim Groups as Terrorist Organizations

Governor DeSantis had ordered agencies in his state to deny funding, contracts, and employment to the groups.

District Court Judge Mark Walker issued a preliminary injunction, blocking an executive order by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that designated two Muslim groups, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim Brotherhood, as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

Judge Walker wrote, “The question before this Court is whether the Governor can, in a non-emergency situation, unilaterally designate one of the largest Muslim civil rights groups in America as a ‘terrorist organization’ and withhold government benefits from anyone providing material support or resources to the group.“ The judge also questioned whether the governor’s order usurps the exclusive authority of the federal government to designate terrorist organizations.

CAIR has over 20 chapters in the U.S., with a primary focus on legal action, outreach, and advocacy. The group has been associated with Islamic extremist groups, with some leaders coming under investigation for terrorism related cases. The second organization impacted by Governor DeSantis’ order, the Muslim Brotherhood, had its Middle Eastern Branches designated as terrorist organizations by President Trump in January.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For district and circuit court judges as they hear cases regarding terrorism designations and homeland security concerns.
  • For Governor DeSantis to be discerning as he issues executive orders to address concerns in his state.
  • For the attorneys to seek clarity on the constitutional parameters of the case.
