The department described UCLA’s campus atmosphere as a preventative failure.
The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division has filed a lawsuit against the University of California (UCLA), alleging that the university allowed a hostile environment to pervade its campus toward students and professors alike. The suit alleges that UCLA is in violation of Title VII for “failing to prevent and correct discriminatory and harassing conduct” toward its Jewish and Israeli members.
“The litany of vile acts of antisemitism that allegedly took place, and continue to take place, at UCLA are, if found to be true, a mark of shame against the University of California,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division. “The Justice Department will ensure that UCLA maintains an environment for its employees free from antisemitic harassment.”
The DOJ stated that antisemitic acts have permeated UCLA since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. The DOJ also alleged that during 2024, Jewish professors were assaulted, and swastika graffiti appeared on university buildings, saying that several Jewish and Israeli employees were compelled to take leave, work from home, or even leave their jobs because of these actions.
