Energy Secretary Extends Operations of Essential Coal Plant

The department cites a need for the continued use of coal-powered energy.

Secretary of Energy Chris Wright renewed an emergency order, directing the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) to continue operations at the J.H. Campbell coal-fired power plant. The Department of Energy reported that the Campbell plant was “integral in stabilizing the grid” this winter, operating at 650 megawatts before and during Winter Storm Fern at the end of January. The plant had been scheduled for shut down in May 2025, 15 years ahead of its scheduled design life.

“The energy sources that perform when you need them most are inherently the most valuable—that’s why beautiful, clean coal was the MVP of recent winter storms,” Secretary Wright said. “Hundreds of American lives have likely been saved because of President Trump’s actions saving America’s coal plants, including this Michigan coal plant which ran daily during Winter Storm Fern. This emergency order will mitigate the risk of blackouts and maintain affordable, reliable, and secure electricity access across the region.”

In recent studies, the MISO areas of operation were assessed to be at elevated risk, with a “potential for insufficient operating reserves in above-normal conditions.” The Energy Department continues to highlight the importance of coal-powered energy.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  •  For U.S. energy officials as they continue to assess energy use and needs in the Midwest.
  • For Secretary Wright as he evaluates data and reviews energy demands across the U.S.
