The department disclosed various plots committed by Chinese nationals and U.S. citizens.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) formally charged six citizens of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and five U.S. citizens for federal conspiracies related to marriage fraud and bribery. In various states across the country, the individuals planned to conscript U.S. citizens, preferably those who were in the U.S. military, to enter into falsified marriages. U.S. citizens who agreed to the plan would be provided payment upfront, when legal immigration status was finalized, and then after the divorce.
Attorney for the Middle District of Florida Gregory Kehoe said the sensitive military access would have been “not just throughout the United States, but throughout the world, and any individual that is just free reign of walking throughout that and happens to be a PRC national is something of great significance to us.”
The indictment additionally alleges that 3 of the individuals conspired to bribe a public official, with the help of a Navy reservist. The reservist offered to bribe an individual and his wife for Department of Defense common access cards. The individual reported the incident and worked under the direction of federal agents, leading to the eventual arrest of the reservist.
