Tulsi Gabbard was born in April 1981 in Leloaloa, American Samoa. She attended Leeward Community College and later earned a Bachelor of Science from Hawaii Pacific University. She joined the Hawaii Army National Guard, serving in the Army’s medical unit. Gabbard deployed to Iraq and then completed officer training. She was deployed to Kuwait as a military police officer. She still served in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Gabbard was elected to the House of Representatives and served on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. She later served on the Subcommittee on Intelligence.

Gabbard campaigned for president in 2020, eventually withdrawing and supporting Joe Biden. She changed her party affiliation to independent in 2022, then shifted to Republican in 2024 and endorsed President Donald Trump during his second reelection campaign.

President Trump nominated her as the Director of National Intelligence in November 2024. The Senate confirmed her in late January 2025, and she assumed office in February.

Gabbard is married to Abraham Williams. She was previously married to Eduardo Tamayo. She is Hindu.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard sent a letter to Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, vice chair of Select Committee on Intelligence, and Representative James Himes of Connecticut, the ranking member of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, explaining her presence when the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently executed a search warrant at a Fulton County election office.

DNI Gabbard wrote, “My presence was requested by the President and executed under my broad statutory authority to coordinate, integrate, and analyze intelligence related to election security, including counterintelligence (CI), foreign and other malign influence, and cybersecurity.”

DNI Gabbard highlighted the FBI’s Intelligence and Counterintelligence divisions that are among the 18 elements she oversees, stating, “ODNI’s Office of General Counsel has found my actions to be consistent and well within my statutory authorities as the Director of National Intelligence.”

DNI Gabbard stressed the importance of election integrity, writing that “election security is a national security issue,” adding, “interference in U.S. elections is a threat to our republic and a national security threat.”

“The President and his Administration are committed to safeguarding the integrity of U.S. elections to ensure that neither foreign nor domestic powers undermine the American people’s right to determine who our elected leaders are,” she added.
