NIH Ends Federal Funding for Research Using Aborted Baby Parts

Director Bhattacharya called the practice “morally abhorrent.”

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Jay Bhattacharya announced that the U.S. will no longer fund any scientific research using tissue harvested from aborted babies. The ban applies to “all NIH-supported extramural research,” such as grants, cooperative agreements, awards, and other contracts.

“NIH is pushing American biomedical science into the 21st century,” Director Bhattacharya said. “This decision is about advancing science by investing in breakthrough technologies more capable of modeling human health and disease. Under President Trump’s leadership, taxpayer-funded research must reflect the best science of today and the values of the American people.”

The NIH director continued, “Now that there is better technology, there’s no scientific harm to this, we’re still going to be able to use the science we need… while at the same time getting rid of this use of aborted fetal tissue which so many people, including me, find morally abhorrent.”

Fetal tissue ethically donated from miscarriages is not prohibited under the ban. “Someone who has had a miscarriage and wants to do a meaningful thing and they donate the tissue from the miscarriage to science, that’s still allowed,” he added. “The only ban is on, you have an abortion specifically to terminate the baby, and then the tissue then gets sold, that’s what’s being banned.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the president and members of his administration as they implement pro-family and pro-life policies.
  • For U.S. health officials as they implement ethical practices and changes to federal research funding.
  • For the safety of the vice president and all the participants in the March for Life today.
