Director Patel promises additional resources to continue to investigate the scope of the fraud happening in Minnesota.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating a potential fraud scheme that includes hundreds of millions of dollars of social-services aid money. The primary focus of the investigation is on the nonprofit organization Feeding Our Future, which has more than 200 federal child nutrition program sites across Minnesota.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated, “Fraud that steals from taxpayers and robs vulnerable children will remain a top FBI priority in Minnesota and nationwide.”
Court documents allege that money that was given to this organization to help feed children was instead used by fraudsters to buy vacations, luxury vehicles, waterfront properties, jewelry, and other lavish items. It is estimated that some of the money also ended up in the hands of a terror group in Somalia linked to al-Qaeda.
Nearly 90 people have already been convicted, with two defendants facing sentences of 28 years in prison and the payment of $48 million in restitution.
