Interior Department Pauses Offshore Wind Leases Citing National Security

Offshore Wind Turbines
Officials fear that the turbine blades and reflective towers can interfere with radar.

The Department of the Interior announced that all leases for large-scale offshore wind projects in the United States have been paused. The agency cited national security risks that were recently identified by the Department of War. The findings indicated that the movement of the large turbine blades, combined with highly reflective towers, creates radar interference known as “clutter.” This clutter could prevent legitimate moving targets from being identified, as well as generate other false targets.

This pause on all current leases will give both the Departments of the Interior and of War time to work with leaseholders and other state partners to come up with methods to mitigate the security risks.

“The prime duty of the United States government is to protect the American people,“ Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated. He said that this action “addresses emerging national security risks, including the rapid evolution of the relevant adversary technologies, and the vulnerabilities created by large-scale offshore wind projects with proximity near our east coast population centers.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Secretary Burgum as he works to ensure the U.S.’ national security.
  • For Secretary Hegseth and U.S. defense officials as they collaborate with the Interior Department on this matter.
  • For the Lord to guide U.S. officials as they seek solutions to the radar interference caused by the turbine blades.
