Ted Cruz

U.S. Senator from Texas

Rafael Edward “Ted” Cruz was born in December 1970 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, moving to Texas as a youth. He earned an undergraduate degree in public policy from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He received a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. He clerked at the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and later with Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court William Rehnquist. He entered into private practice.

During the George W. Bush administration, Cruz served as an Associate Deputy Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice and later as the director of policy planning at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. He was appointed to the office of Solicitor General of Texas by the governor, serving in that position for six years, returning once again to private practice.

He was elected to the United States Senate, assuming his seat in January 2013. He was a primary candidate in the 2020 presidential election.

Cruz is married to Heidi Nelson, and they have two daughters. He is a Southern Baptist.

In the News…

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, chair of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee, introduced the Rotorcraft Operations Transparency and Oversight Reform (ROTOR) Act earlier this year to require the U.S. military to use a precise location-sharing tool that coordinates flights with commercial aircraft in metropolitan areas.

Co-sponsored by Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington, the legislation was stripped from the recently Senate-approved National Defense Authorization Act, which left military aircraft waivers in place, and loosened the Transportation Department’s and Federal Aviation Administration’s restrictions.

Senator Cruz said, “The special carve-out was exactly what caused the January 29th crash that claimed 67 lives.”

“Eleven months ago, 67 souls perished in a collision over DCA that was imminently preventable,” Senator Cruz stated. “We have an obligation to the flying public, to all our families, to do everything we can to prevent another fatal accident from happening.”

The National Transportation Safety Board continues to investigate the crash and raised concerns about 85 near misses that have occurred near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in recent years prior to the January collision.
