DHS Suspends Green Card Lottery Program After Brown University Shooting

The gunman was found to have been a legal resident originally from Portugal.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem announced the suspension of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ Green Card Lottery Program. This move was made after the Brown University gunman was revealed to be a Portuguese national. The suspect entered the U.S. through the residency program in 2017.

Secretary Noem said, “At President Trump’s direction, I am immediately directing USCIS to pause the DV1 program to ensure no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous program.”

During the Brown University shooting on December 13th, two students were killed and nine were injured. The gunman reportedly later committed suicide, having been found dead in Salem, New Hampshire, from a self-inflicted wound. The suspect was also implicated in a shooting at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The State Department explained the Green Card Lottery, officially known as the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, requires applicants to be from a country with low immigration rates to the United States who meet education requirements.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For President Trump as he strives to improve the immigration system’s security.
  • For Secretary Noem as she heads the Department of Homeland Security.
