EPA Announces U.S.-Mexico Agreement to Address Tijuana River Sewage Issues

Minute 333 is expected to have a greater effect than past efforts on the sewage issues between Tijuana and Southern California.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that a new agreement with Mexico has been signed to address the ongoing Tijuana River sewage crisis. The agreement, called Minute 333, lists a new set of actions to be taken, including infrastructure projects, research, enhanced monitoring, and planning ahead to account for future population growth in Tijuana.

The Tijuana River Sewage Crisis, which has been occurring for decades, has seen untreated raw sewage flowing from Mexico into Southern California, resulting in beach closures, foul odors, lost economic opportunities, and people getting ill. It has been a point of contention between the United States and Mexico, and officials are optimistic that this new agreement will be more effective than past efforts to resolve the crisis.

“We have set the framework for tremendous steps to be made, and we now look forward to very quickly hitting the ground running to implement the mutually agreed upon actions,” EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said. “I saw the frustration of San Diego area residents firsthand when I visited in April. I promised them a 100% solution to this issue, and the Trump EPA is doing its part to deliver.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Administrator Zeldin as he continues to work with Mexican government officials to see the plans of Minute 333 carried out.
  • For U.S. environmental officials as they seek to ensure the changes in Minute 333 are implemented.
