Over 260,000 cases of shredded cheese have been recalled due to the potential for metal fragment contamination.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Great Lakes Cheese Co. initiated a recall in October for many shredded cheeses sold at grocery stores, including Walmart, Target, Aldi, Sprouts, and Publix. The FDA recently reclassified the recall as a “Class II,” meaning that the cheese can cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” due to potential contamination from metal fragments.
Cheeses that were recalled include certain brands of shredded mozzarella, Italian-style, pizza-style, mozzarella and provolone blend, and mozzarella and parmesan blend. The cheeses were distributed across thirty-one U.S. states, as well as Puerto Rico.
The FDA warned that the ingestion of metal fragments could cause dental injuries, lacerations of the mouth or throat, or perforation of the intestines. Consumers who believe they have purchased affected products in October are encouraged to either discard the product or return it to the retailer from which they purchased it.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for FDA officials as they seek to protect consumers from potentially harmful food products.
- For Commissioner Marty Makary to be discerning as he leads the Food and Drug Administration.
