The order places sanctions against group chapters in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week, beginning the process of designating certain chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs). The order cites specific chapters of the group located in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt, bringing sanctions against them.
The president’s order instructs Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, “in consultation with the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence,” to submit a report on whether or not to designate the chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorists and move forward on the designations within 45 days.
The White House fact sheet stated, “President Trump is confronting the Muslim Brotherhood’s transnational network, which fuels terrorism and destabilization campaigns against U.S. interests and allies in the Middle East.”
