Fret not yourself because of evildoers. – Proverbs 24:19

A commentary on today’s verse states, “Sin pays its servants very bad wages, for it gives them the very reverse of what is promised.” It often appears that the rewards of the world go to the one who does evil. But the Word of God clearly shows that the wealth or notoriety the unrighteous have now is all they can expect to get – their portion is only in this life (Psalm 17:14).

Those who love righteousness and those who love sin will always be at odds with each other. The latter group endeavors to injure the former, whether actively or subtly. Because they cannot abide peaceably with those who love God, they lie and seek to ruin the character of those who seek to do what is good, or they will scheme to remove a person from the position he holds. In the end, due to their hatred and bitterness, the unrighteous have no real happiness.

Trust the Lord and do not envy the temporary prosperity of the wicked. As you look to God for comfort and sustenance, you overcome any grief or worry they cause. Though you may experience unpleasant and disagreeable times beyond your control, be confident in your Savior and focus on His loving care for you. God is good and wise and always in control. Remember the Lord’s instruction to “fret not“ because “the lamp of the wicked will be put out” in His timing (Proverbs 24:19-20).

Embrace God’s Word and His guidance as you live the life of integrity to which He has called you. Seek the good of those around you, not just the well-being of your own family. Then pray for those who govern, that they be led by the wisdom of God and His righteousness. Stay loyal to God and wait patiently for Him to work.
