Energy Department Announces Funding to Renew National Quantum Research Centers

The action supports next-generation innovation in quantum computing, sensing, and communication across five national laboratories.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $625 million to renew its five National Quantum Information Science (QIS) Research Centers, extending their work to advance quantum computing, sensing, networking, and related technologies. Created under the National Quantum Initiative Act of 2018, the centers are intended to strengthen U.S. research leadership, develop practical quantum tools, and expand partnerships among government, industry, and academia.

“Breakthroughs in QIS have the potential to revolutionize the ways we sense, communicate, and compute, sparking entirely new technologies and industries,” said Energy Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil. “The renewal of DOE’s National Quantum Information Science Research Centers will empower America to secure our advantage in pioneering the next generation of scientific and engineering advancements needed for this technology.”

Each center will pursue distinct research priorities. The awards, subject to congressional appropriations, will support projects for up to five years through competitive peer review.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Under Secretary Gil to be discerning as he facilitates the funding of technological research and development.
  • For Secretary Wright and U.S. energy officials as they support the development of quantum computing.
