The BBC edited parts of his January 6, 2021, speech in a “false, defamatory, malicious, disparaging, and inflammatory” way.
President Donald Trump called for a “full and fair retraction” from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for its edits of his January 6, 2021, speech, threatening a $1 billion lawsuit if they do not. The British public broadcaster spliced together different parts of President Trump’s speech on the ellipses that day for use in a documentary, which made it sound as if he were inciting unrest.
The president’s attorney said the edits, which removed President Trump’s statements encouraging a peaceful protest, were “false, defamatory, malicious, disparaging, and inflammatory.”
The chair of the broadcasting company acknowledged that the edit was an “error of judgment“ and that the edits “did give the impression of a direct call for violent action.“ Some BBC executives have resigned in the aftermath.
The United Kingdom’s government spokesperson stated, “Our position is clear, the BBC is independent and it’s for the corporation to respond to questions about their editorial decisions.”
