President Urges Senate to Eliminate the Filibuster to Reopen Government

Trump addresses Congress
The Senate has failed to temporarily fund the government through 13 votes.

President Donald Trump recommended that the Senate majority utilize the “nuclear option” of removing the chamber’s filibuster in order to end the government shutdown.

President Trump said the minority party “want[s] Trillions of Dollars to be taken from our Healthcare System and given to others, who are not deserving — People who have come into our Country illegally, many from prisons and mental institutions. This will hurt American citizens, and Republicans will not let it happen. It is now time for the Republicans to play their ‘TRUMP CARD,’ and go for what is called the Nuclear Option — Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!”

The president said that the current majority may as well eliminate the filibuster since, when the majority changes parties in the future, shifting from the 60-vote filibuster to a simple majority would likely be the first change they would make.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated at the beginning of the current Congress in January, “One of my priorities as leader will be to ensure that the Senate stays the Senate. That means preserving the legislative filibuster — the Senate rule that today has perhaps the greatest impact in preserving the founders’ vision of the Senate.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for the president as he seeks ways to reopen the government without massively increasing healthcare spending.
  • For Senate Majority Leader Thune as he holds discussions and considers options to end the government shutdown.
