President Donald Trump has signed trade deals during his trip to Asia. The finalized agreements were with Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The tariffs on U.S. goods ranged from very low to nonexistent, while the tariffs on products exported to the U.S. will carry a 19 percent levy.
“These landmark deals demonstrate that America can maintain tariffs to shrink the goods trade deficit while opening new markets for American farmers, ranchers, workers, and manufacturers,” U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated. “I thank my counterparts from Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam for their collaboration and commitment in achieving a more balanced trade relationship with the United States.”
President Trump also oversaw the signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit
President Trump ended trade talks with Canada after Ontario Premier Doug Ford ran ads during the Major League Baseball championship that featured out-of-context dialogue from former President Reagan about the downside of tariffs. While Prime Minister Carney said he is ready to resume trade negotiations, President Trump said he does not plan to meet with him “for a long time.”
