ICE Arrests Illegal Alien Serving as Illinois Police Officer

Federal officials say the officer, a Montenegrin national, overstayed a visa by more than a decade.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Chicago have arrested a police officer in Hanover Park, Illinois, who is a native of Montenegro. He allegedly remained in the country illegally after overstaying a visitor visa by more than 10 years. According to ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations division, the man entered the U.S. on a B-2 visa and was required to leave by March 2015. During an ICE operation in Rolling Meadows this month, federal officers identified and detained him, noting that federal law prohibits non-citizens without lawful status from possessing firearms.

“Illegal aliens are prohibited from owning or possessing firearms — full stop,” said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Chicago Field Office Director Sam Olson. “This is the second known instance in recent months of a local police department hiring an illegal alien and unlawfully issuing him a firearm while on duty in violation of federal law. It is alarming how local jurisdictions continue to disregard federal law to the detriment of their communities.”

ICE reported that the Montenegrin man confirmed his employment and acknowledged that his firearm authorization applied only while on duty.
