Senate Bills to Pay Federal Workers Blocked from Floor Vote

Minority party seeks to block layoffs of federal workers.

Senators Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland each introduced bills this week that proposed to pay federal workers during the government shutdown. The latter bill sought to prohibit President Donald Trump’s administration from laying off any federal employees during the funding lapse.

“I really don’t have an objection to paying furloughed workers,” Senator Johnson said. “They’re going to get paid anyway. So let’s figure out those areas of agreement. I mean, we’re pretty darn close.”

Senator Van Hollen stated, “We don’t want any federal employee to be punished for a shutdown they have nothing to do with.“

Senator Johnson said a compromise looked likely. “I think we can fix it over the weekend.”
