California solar plant constructed over ten years ago to shut down in 2026 after falling short of energy generation estimates.
President Donald Trump’s administration announced the cancellation of billions in financial awards for 223 “clean“ and “renewable“ energy projects, saving roughly $7.56 billion in taxpayer funding.
“On day one, the Energy Department began the critical task of reviewing billions of dollars in financial awards, many rushed through in the final months of the Biden administration with inadequate documentation by any reasonable business standard,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright said. “President Trump promised to protect taxpayer dollars and expand America’s supply of affordable, reliable, and secure energy.”
One example of failed green energy projects over the decades is the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility in California’s Mojave Desert, set to shut down next year after billions in investments. In 2011, the U.S. Department of Energy under President Barack Obama gave the project three loans totaling $1.5 billion to construct the $2.2 billion plant, which is comprised of three 459-foot towers and five square miles covered in thousands of computer-controlled mirrors, known as heliostats.
Energy experts called the technology “obsolete,“ as innovation has quickly surpassed the Ivanpah plant’s approach. Environmentalists have opposed the plant due to its danger to wildlife, with roughly six thousand birds per year perishing due to the intense heat, which can reach 1,000 degrees, as the heliostats’ mirrors reflect toward its towers.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For discernment for Secretary Wright as he assesses the government funding allotted to energy development projects.
- For U.S. energy officials to choose efficient and effective power-generating technologies for federal support.
