Have you ever been too comfortable? In an overly comfortable position, you may be so relaxed that you do not hear what is happening around you. You might expect others to contribute to your comfort. You may even become upset if that comfort is disturbed.
Unfortunately, some citizens of the United States have become so “comfortable“ with the liberty we have been afforded, they are “disturbed“ by the contribution required to maintain freedom. God’s blessings on this country have been innumerable – great land to produce an abundance of food, easy access to every convenience, and wealth beyond much of the rest of the world. Yet, many lack thankfulness, and some are prone to entitlement.
Today’s verse was directed at the believers in the church of Laodicea. Their medical and textile industries afforded them a more than comfortable lifestyle. This congregation was filled with people materially rich but very complacent… too comfortable. Thus, the Lord described them as spiritually blind, pitiable, poor, and in need of repentance (Revelation 3:17-19).
With the warning, the Lord graciously adds an invitation that is relevant even now: He stands at the door of your heart and knocks. He wants you, the believer, to answer His call, to come alive again with zealousness for your faith, an eager selflessness to tell of the blessings the Lord gives through belief in His Son. If ever there was a time for the church to come alive, it is now! As you pray for this nation, may the Holy Spirit stir you to be courageous in the words you say and the actions you take in this unstable time. God hears your prayers and will guide you to have an active, vibrant faith – one that can affect change in those around you.
