Supreme Court Denies Google’s Emergency Request over App Store Requirements

Temporarily upholds lower courts’ decisions regarding third-party payments.

The Supreme Court declined Google’s emergency request to halt a lower court’s injunction mandating alternate payment methods for in-app purchases.

In 2020, Epic Games, the maker of the popular game Fortnite, sued Google for only allowing in-app purchases to be made through Google Billing, claiming it was a monopolistic practice. A San Francisco jury ruled in Epic Games’ favor in 2023. Google appealed this decision to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which upheld the lower court’s order earlier this year.

Google has yet to formally submit an appeal to the Supreme Court. The requirement to accept third-party apps and payments will take effect next summer.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For federal judges as they hear cases of corporate monopolies and antitrust activities.
  • For wisdom for the justices of the Supreme Court as they consider requests for emergency stays on lower court opinions.
