Updated NOTAM service begins phased rollout to improve aviation safety and reliability.
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) launched the first phase of its new Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) Management Service, designed to modernize how safety alerts and airspace changes are shared with pilots and flight planners.
“We are bringing our aviation system into the 21st century at lightning speed to enhance safety in our skies. The new NOTAM system is an important proof point of how we can quickly and effectively modernize our skies,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
The earlier system, developed in 1985, experienced several nationwide disruptions in recent years, prompting accelerated updates. The new platform began initial operations late last month and will operate alongside the legacy system until full transition in spring 2026.
The updated system introduces near-real-time data exchange, a modern interface, and a cloud-based structure intended to increase reliability and security. More than four million NOTAMs are issued each year, covering information such as runway closures and airspace restrictions.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Transportation Secretary Duffy as he oversees the upgrades to technology in air travel safety.
- For FAA Administrator Bedford as he facilitates efforts to implement the new airspace notification system.
