In the News…

The U.S. Senate unanimously passed the 988 Lifeline Cybersecurity Responsibility Act, introduced by Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma. Senator Alex Padilla of California sponsored the measure, as part of the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act, that strengthens the cybersecurity of the 988 suicide hotline.

The legislation calls for the Government Accountability Office to conduct a study of the cybersecurity risks the 988 system faces. The bill will require the Health and Human Services Chief Information Security Officer to coordinate with the 988 Lifeline to prevent attacks and address vulnerabilities. A previous attack caused an outage that took the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline down for a whole day.

“I am grateful to my colleagues for their support of this critical legislation. Increasing cybersecurity measures for the 988 Lifeline is imperative to suicide prevention,” said Senator Mullin. “Suicide is a heartbreaking tragedy, and every life lost is one too many. This bill will keep the lifeline secure to ensure that those experiencing a mental health crisis have access to the resources and support they need when they need it most.”
