Kashyap Pramod Patel was born in February 1980 in Garden City, New York. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond, a Certificate of Higher Education from the University College London, and his Juris Doctor from Pace University.

Patel began his career as a public defender in Miami-Dade County, Florida. He then served as a federal public defender for the Southern District of Florida. He became a junior staff member in the Justice Department. Patel later served as a prosecutor in the DOJ’s National Security Division, while simultaneously serving on the Joint Special Operations Command. He then joined the Counterterrorism Division.

Patel worked for the House Intelligence Committee and then became senior counsel for the House Oversight Committee. He later joined the National Security Council. The national security advisor appointed Patel to the International Organizations and Alliances. He then became the National Security Council’s senior director of the counterterrorism directorate. He later served as the senior advisor to the acting director of national intelligence, then as principal deputy director of national intelligence. After this, he returned to his role in the counterterrorism directorate.

Patel was appointed the chief of staff of the acting defense secretary in the final months of President Donald Trump’s first term. Patel then managed a consulting company and established a nonprofit to assist military, veteran, and law enforcement defendants with legal costs.

President Trump nominated Patel to be Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in November 2024. He was confirmed by the Senate in February 2025 and assumed his post the following day.

Patel is not married.

Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel testified before the House Judiciary Committee regarding the progress his agency has made against crime in the first seven months of President Trump’s second administration.

 “The FBI has arrested more than 23,000 violent criminals,” Director Patel said. “Twenty-three thousand in seven months. That’s twice as many year-to-date last year. We’ve taken over six thousand firearms off the streets.“

“We’ve identified and found and located 4,700 child victims, that is a 35 percent increase year to date, last year,“  he continued. “We’ve arrested 1,500 child predators, that is a 10 percent increase year to date last year in just seven months. We’ve assisted our partners with countless counter-terrorism operations around the world. We’ve captured at the FBI four of the most top 10 wanted fugitives in the world in seven months.” He later highlighted the thousands of kilograms of illicit drugs his agency has seized.

The director added, “In just seven months, we are on track to produce the lowest murder rate in modern U.S. history by double digits.”
