Secret Service Dismantles Network that Threatened UN General Assembly

300 connected servers discovered, powerful enough to disable cell towers.

The Secret Service announced on Tuesday that it uncovered and disrupted a New York-based network of servers that had enough power to shut down cell towers and other critical telecommunications infrastructure. The Secret Service conducted an investigation into threats against government officials originating from this network and discovered the plot, seizing hundreds of servers and 100,000 SIM cards spread across multiple sites within the state.

The network could have been capable of sending 30 million text messages per minute, disabling police dispatch and disrupting emergency service hotlines in the tri-state area. The Secret Service focused on disabling the network ahead of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level meetings this week.

“The potential for disruption to our country’s telecommunications posed by this network of devices cannot be overstated,” stated U.S. Secret Service Director Sean Curran. “The U.S. Secret Service’s protective mission is all about prevention, and this investigation makes it clear to potential bad actors that imminent threats to our protectees will be immediately investigated, tracked down, and dismantled.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For vigilance for Director Curran and the men and women serving in the Secret Service.
  • For U.S. law enforcement officials as they work to protect public safety and communications.
