It is a federal crime to violate national defense airspace.
A federal court sentenced a man to two months of home confinement and two years of supervised release for flying a drone over a U.S. military installation in Guam. It is a federal crime to violate national defense airspace. The man uploaded the video recorded by the drone onto his YouTube channel.
He had previously been warned not to take video of the installation. The man said he thought the kind of drone he was using did not require him to notify nearby airports while he was using it.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Districts of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands described the video, uploaded to YouTube on February 1, as “sensitive” and said it had nearly 12,000 views before it was removed from YouTube.
