The U.S. partnered with the Japanese military in island defense drills.
Commander of III Marine Expeditionary Force Lt. General Roger Turner spoke about the Resolute Dragon military exercise near the southern Japanese island of Okinawa. The U.S. Marine Corps military exercise is being conducted alongside the Japanese Self-Defense Force to send “a clear message to any attempt to undermine regional security,” the Marines’ top general stated.
He explained the utilization of the Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System, or NMESIS, and the Marine Air Defense Integrated System, or MADIS, in the exercises.
The general said, “The inherent mobility and long-range precision strike capability of NMESIS, particularly its ability to conduct ship interdiction, is a critical component to the littoral defense strategy.”
“III MEF and Western Army are able to rapidly deploy and integrate modern, lethal systems to defend key maritime terrain,” General Turner said. “And that’s not just on the island of Okinawa, but also throughout the southwest islands.”
