BLM Fines Two Shooters for Starting 700 Acre Wildfire

The men used illegal exploding ammunition, which led to the 2024 Idaho Fires.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued a $24,000 fine against two recreational shooters last week after discovering their use of illegal ammunition caused a 2024 wildfire in southwest Idaho. The fires spread throughout Leeds and Chalky Butte after the two men used exploding ammunition to shoot at targets.

The agency noted that irresponsible recreational target shooting has been the leading cause of wildfires in the past year, with common violations including the use of steel component ammunition, shooting at steel targets, and using exploding targets.

“These settlements show that unsafe recreation has real consequences, while ensuring the public is repaid for the damages and restoration of Idaho’s BLM lands,” said Boise District Manager Shelly Lynch.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For District Manager Lynch to be discerning as she oversees the BLM regional office.
  • For Interior Secretary Burgum and BLM Principal Deputy Director Bill Groffy as they seek to reduce the risk of wildfires.
