FDA Advocates for Child-Resistant Packaging for Nicotine Pouches

The agency issued an advisory to consumers and a request to manufacturers.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued cautions and recommendations on preventing children from accessing nicotine pouches. Nicotine can be toxic and even life-threatening to children younger than five years, with doses even as low as 1 to 4 mg causing adverse effects.

FDA Commissioner Marty Makary recommended that drug manufacturers develop child-safe packaging for consumers and that parents securely store nicotine pouches, preferably out of reach and out of view.

“I am concerned about rising reports of nicotine exposures in young children caused by nicotine pouches,” Commissioner Makary stated. “The fruity flavors and bright, colorful designs of nicotine pouch products could resemble candy and seem attractive to children. Manufacturers should consider what steps they can take to prevent accidental exposures and ingestion.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Commissioner Makary as he seeks to prevent children from accessing and becoming harmed by nicotine exposure.
  • For parents who use nicotine pouches to be discerning in their storage and watchful of their young children.
