Secretary Wright says that the nation is facing an energy emergency due to “unprecedented energy demand and resource retirements outpacing new generation additions.”
The Department of Energy issued an emergency order directing PJM Interconnection (PJM) and Constellation Energy to keep Units 3 and 4 of Pennsylvania’s Eddystone Generating Station running through November 26, 2025, to help prevent power shortages in the Mid-Atlantic.
“With unprecedented energy demand and resource retirements outpacing new generation additions, the country is facing an energy emergency. Today’s order proves that the Trump Administration is dedicated to confronting this critical issue,” said Energy Secretary Chris Wright. “This administration considers power outages and soaring energy costs to be unacceptable.”
The units have already supported grid reliability during recent heat waves. This action follows PJM’s repeated warnings about resource adequacy risks, as highlighted in a 2023 report. PJM leadership has cautioned Congress about growing reliability challenges, and federal analysis indicates that power outages could escalate significantly by 2030 if dependable generation sources are removed without sufficient replacements.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for Secretary Wright as he seeks to ensure adequate power availability for the Mid-Atlantic.
- For Energy Department officials as they assess the current energy production and future requirements for power across the nation.
