Washington, New Mexico, and California may lose federal funding if they do not comply with the language rules for truckers.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has given the states of Washington, New Mexico, and California 30 days to comply with the federal mandate that truckers meet English proficiency rules. The secretary said the states will lose federal funding if they do not enforce the rule, which became effective in June of this year.
“We at DOT and Federal Motor Carriers, we are not going to tolerate states that don’t comply with the rules that come from this department,” Secretary Duffy said at a press conference. “We are going to give these states 30 days to come into compliance with truck drivers speaking proficiently the English language, or we’re going to look at the federal funding that they receive under the Motor Carriers Safety Assistance Program.”
He added, “Making sure drivers of very heavy, 80,000-pound rigs can speak the language is truly a critical safety issue.”
Last week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that work visas for commercial truck drivers have been paused as they administration addresses the issue of semi drivers who are unable to understand English. The action came after a fatal collision involving an illegal U-turn made by an immigrant in Florida which killed the three occupants of a minivan.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Duffy to be led by the Lord as he seeks to ensure the safety of U.S. motorists.
- For Secretary Rubio as he assess national security and public safety in decisions regarding visa applications.
- For wisdom for U.S. officials as they address the dangers posed by illegal aliens across the nation who do not obey federal laws.
