The agency says the psychedelic drug shows promise despite addictiveness and short supply.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new ketamine-based drug called KETARx for use in surgical pain management.
Ketamine can be an addictive psychoactive drug, but in reviewing the complete response letters submitted by PharmaTher Holdings, the FDA ruled that the possible benefits of using the drug post-surgery outweigh its risks.
The World Health Organization has listed ketamine on its Essential Medicines List. It is the only psychedelic or psychedelic-adjacent drug included on the list.
