VA Terminates Union Contracts for the Majority of Its Workforce

The move comes as lawsuits continue to make their way through the court system.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced last week that it was canceling all union contracts for over 377,000 of its employees, roughly 75 percent of its total workforce of 483,000 employees. The department said the decision will make it easier to “promote high-performing employees, hold poor performers accountable, and improve benefits and services to America’s Veterans.”

VA Secretary Doug Collins said, “Too often, unions that represent VA employees fight against the best interests of Veterans while protecting and rewarding bad workers. We’re making sure VA resources and employees are singularly focused on the job we were sent here to do: providing top-notch care and service to those who wore the uniform.”

President Donald Trump signed an executive order in February ending collective bargaining with federal workers unions, which represent over one-third of all federal workers. There are a number of lawsuits against the order still being processed by the courts, but the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals allowed President Trump’s administration to continue firing union workers while the lawsuits play out.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Collins to receive God’s wisdom as he heads the Veterans Affairs Department.
  • For VA Department employees to focus on providing U.S. veterans the best care and support.
