U.S., South Korea Annual Military Exercise Faces Unique Tensions

The Ulchi Freedom Shield military drills have been a source of tension with North Korea.

South Korea and the United States issued a joint statement announcing their annual military drills between August 18 and 28. Each country’s representative, South Korean Colonel Lee Sung-jun and U.S. Colonel Ryan Donald, said that a similar number of troops would be involved in the exercise as in previous years.

“We look across the globe at the challenges we may face on the battlefield and incorporate that so we can challenge the participants in the exercise,” Colonel Donald said. “We are focused on ensuring the alliance is sustainable and credibly deters aggression from the [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] and addresses the broader regional security challenges,” he said.

Colonel Lee said that parts of the exercises will be rescheduled to next month due to factors, “including ensuring training conditions during extreme heat and maintaining a balanced combined defense posture year-round.“

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Hegseth to seek God’s direction as he heads the Defense Department.
  • For God’s protection over active-duty U.S. troops as they engage in the joint drills with South Korea.
