The gunman was an active-duty sergeant with an upcoming DUI arraignment.
The U.S. Army awarded medals to six soldiers who took down the gunman at Fort Stewart on Wednesday and aided those who were wounded in the shooting. Three of the five soldiers who were shot have been released from the hospital. Of the two remaining victims, one will reportedly have a longer recovery.
“One of the things I can say unequivocally is that the fast action of these soldiers under stress and under trauma and under fire absolutely saved lives from being lost,” said U.S. Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll.
“One of the soldiers tackled the person, so just think about this, they were unarmed and ran at and tackled an armed person who they knew was actively shooting their buddies, their colleagues, their fellow soldiers,” Secretary Driscoll added. “Another soldier jumped on top of the person to subdue them until federal law enforcement arrived. The other soldiers, using their training that they developed over years and years, started to take care of mass casualties.”
The shooter is an active-duty sergeant who has served since 2018 without behavioral incidents or combat experience. He is separately awaiting arraignment on charges of driving under the influence.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Driscoll to seek God’s guidance as he heads the U.S. Army.
- For officials at Fort Stewart as they deal with the investigation into the sergeant who opened fire.
- With gratitude to the Lord that no one was killed and for healing for the injured.
