New initiative intends to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign uranium and accelerate domestic reactor innovation.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently launched a pilot program to support the development of “advanced nuclear reactors” and rebuild the domestic supply chain for nuclear fuel. The Department issued a Request for Application (RFA) from U.S. companies to construct and operate nuclear fuel production lines under DOE authorization. This initiative seeks to reduce dependence on foreign-enriched uranium, boost private investment in nuclear energy, and advance testing of new reactor technologies.
“America has the resources and the expertise to lead the world in nuclear energy development, but we need secure domestic supply chains to fuel this rapidly growing energy source and achieve a true nuclear energy renaissance,” said Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
The department began the pilot reactor program in June and expects to select at least three advanced reactor designs by the end of summer, planning for operational testing by July 4, 2026. While the pilot fuel lines will focus on research and development, they could also pave the way for future commercial licensing.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Wright to receive God’s direction as he oversees the Department of Energy.
- For U.S. energy officials as they seek to support the development of nuclear energy programs.
