Senator Proposes Immigration Reform for Long-Term Migrant Residents

The long-shot bill would update the Immigration Act of 1929.

Senator Alex Padilla of California announced that he will introduce the Renewing Immigration Provisions of the Immigration Act of 1929 on Monday. The bill would allow immigrants living in the United States continuously for seven years to automatically qualify for registry as a lawful permanent resident. The senator maintains that this would allow many working, taxpaying immigrants to continue benefiting the United States while reducing the work of immigration courts and lawyers.

“Roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants live in the United States today, yet most have no way to earn permanent legal status,” Senator Padilla’s office said in a statement. “The overwhelming majority of these undocumented immigrants have established roots in the U.S. They work in essential jobs and pay taxes.”

The United States has not passed major immigration reform since 1986. The current cutoff date for continuous permanent resident qualifications is 1972, which is over 50 years ago.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senator Padilla as he introduces the legislation to advance the date for automatic immigrant registry.
  • For wisdom for members of Congress as they consider legislation regarding immigration and citizenship.
