Bureau of Land Management Seeks Public Input on Utah Coal Exploration Plan

The proposed drilling project in Sanpete County is part of a national initiative to boost U.S. coal production.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) opened a 30-day public comment period earlier this month for a proposed coal exploration project in Utah’s Muddy Creek Canyon area. Canyon Fuel Company, LLC, is seeking to drill 10 exploratory holes across more than 9,200 acres of public land in Sanpete County, using low-impact methods. If approved, the project would move into an environmental review phase under the National Environmental Policy Act. Public comments will be accepted through August 11, 2025.

This is the bureau’s first coal exploration notice since 2019 and is part of a broader federal initiative to revitalize the U.S. coal industry. Recent steps under President Trump’s administration include new leasing evaluations in Montana, Wyoming, and Alabama, as well as emergency leasing proposals in North Dakota.

“This project marks another important step in restoring commonsense access to America’s energy resources,” said Acting BLM Director Bill Groffy. “Since April, we’ve taken a series of actions to revitalize the U.S. coal industry—supporting jobs, local economies, and energy security.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Acting Director Groffy to be led by the Lord as he heads the Bureau of Land Management.
  • For the president and U.S. energy officials as they seek to expand U.S. energy production and development.
