GAO Report Reveals Security Failures Before Assassination Attempt on Former President Trump

Senator Grassley pushes for reforms after report shows Secret Service missed warning signs despite prior intelligence.

A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report revealed that the Secret Service received tips about a potential threat to then-candidate President Donald Trump at least 10 days before an assassination attempt occurred at a campaign rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The report, requested by Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, found the agency did not have a clear process to share that intelligence with local or federal law enforcement responsible for securing the event. As a result, the information was not acted upon in time to prevent the incident in which a “bullet grazed Trump’s ear” and killed firefighter Corey Comperatore.

“As an important step, I allocated $1.17 billion in the One Big Beautiful Bill to provide the Secret Service with additional funding,” Senator Grassley said in a release regarding the report. “I’m hopeful this significant injection of resources will go a long way in bringing the agency up to speed.”

Senators Chuck Grassley and Rand Paul criticized the Secret Service’s handling of the situation, with the latter challenging former Director Kimberly Cheadle’s prior claims that no advance requests for security were made. Senator Paul cited multiple documented requests for counter-snipers and noted a report about a suspicious individual with a scoped weapon was later confirmed to be the shooter.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senator Grassley as he heads the Senate Judiciary Committee and seeks to ensure improvements in the Secret Service.
  • For Senator Paul as he presides over the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and requests information from the Secret Service regarding its response.
