Secretary Rubio expresses disappointment at the lack of progress after meeting with the Russian foreign minister.
President Donald Trump addressed Russia stalling peace talks on Monday during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
“We are very unhappy, I am, with Russia,” President Trump said. “But we’ll discuss that maybe a different day. But we’re very, very unhappy with them, and we’re going to be doing very severe tariffs.”
President Trump added, “I’m disappointed in President Putin because I thought we would have had a deal two months ago, but it doesn’t seem to get there. Based on that, we’re going to be doing secondary tariffs. If we don’t have a deal in 50 days, it’s very simple, and they’ll be at 100%. That’s the way it is. It can be more simple. It’s just the way it is. I hope we don’t have to do it.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a meeting with Russian officials last week in Malaysia, the latest attempt to negotiate potential peace between Russia and Ukraine. Secretary Rubio was critical of Russia for its “lack of progress“ toward peace.
“Our strategy is to continue to engage all parties involved in finding an outcome to this conflict,” Secretary Rubio said after meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. “We will engage any time that we have an opportunity to do so, like we did today. I echoed what the president said—both disappointment and frustration at the lack of progress.”
