President Trump Announces Extended Deadline for 35 Percent Tariffs on Canada

He stated the higher-than-expected rate of 25 percent due to fentanyl trafficking.

On Thursday, President Donald Trump unveiled a new proposed tariff rate against Canadian products, raising the initial proposed rate from 25 percent to 35 percent.

President Trump’s administration has announced a number of tariffs against U.S. neighbors Mexico and Canada, stating that neither country has taken enough steps to stem the smuggling of illegal drugs across U.S. borders. The administration set a new deadline of August 1 to see if the steps to reassess whether the steps taken by Canada have been effective. In his announcement, President Trump said that the 35 percent rate may change depending on what his administration sees.

“If Canada works with me to stop the flow of fentanyl, we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment to this letter,” President Trump wrote.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to President Trump’s announcement later that day, saying that his government had “steadfastly defended our workers and businesses” and “will continue to do so as we work towards the revised deadline of August 1.”

“Canada has made vital progress to stop the scourge of fentanyl in North America,” he added.
