The president’s administration is pursuing information that the agency leaders made false statements to Congress.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has reportedly launched an investigation into Former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey for false statements to Congress connected to the 2016 probe into ties between President Donald Trump and Russia ahead of the presidential election.
Current CIA Director John Ratcliffe recently released a review that criticized the 2016 intelligence community for the assessment, which he stated “was conducted through an atypical & corrupt process under the politically charged environments of former [Director] Brennan & former FBI [Director] Comey.”
The Steele dossier was at the heart of the allegations at the time. President Trump fired Director Comey within the first month of his first term.
The results of the investigation, titled the Mueller report, were published in 2019. While the report showed no collusion committed by President Trump’s campaign, it revealed Russian preference for Donald Trump and potential attempts to influence the U.S. election.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said she was glad to hear of the investigation, saying, “The truth must come out. … That’s what the president believes in.”
